Gillette Hotels

Famous for powering the US with its fuel exports, a trip to Gillette will fill you with the energy to get outside and explore the stunning scenery surrounding the city. A tour of the oceanic Eagle Butte Coal Mine will teach you why the city is known as the 'Energy Capital of the US' - but don't worry - the decidedly more beautiful Keyhole State Park and Black Hills National Forest are also within easy reach. Taste the true American West for yourself, by staying in this down-to-earth city, where the spirit of adventure lives on.

Things to see

Keep it to yourself, but Keystone State Park is something of a local secret, and a great place to relax. Visit to feel the wind rushing over your face as you ski across the ripples of a practically deserted reservoir. Or, open a few cans while plucking weighty fish from the heavily populated waters. The spectacular scenery at Black Hills National Forest is no secret, and a day trip is essential at some point during your stay. You'll drive past gorgeous lakes, shimmering in the sun, and squeeze through narrow tunnels bored directly into the rock as you explore the park's borders. Don't visit if you're in a rush, however, as chances are you'll get stuck behind a traffic jam of belligerent buffalo crossing the road at some point. Black Hills is best known for its iconic sculpture of famous US presidents, and their heads watch over the scenery from the top of Mount Rushmore. See another, more natural, rock formation at Devils Tower – which was the first ever National Monument. This spectacular formation rises suddenly from the pine-forested landscape - like a giant thimble - and is visible for miles around. Rock climb to the summit, or hike around its base in the company of the cute prairie dogs that live there.

Where to stay

The menus in downtown Gillette's restaurants will leave you struggling to decide between oozing bison steaks, and succulent river trout – don't worry if you can't pick, though, it all tastes great. If you're here for the entertainment, stay in a hotel near the sprawling Cam-Plex facility. The sounds of scraping ice hockey pucks, clattering hooves, and growling engines fill the air around this huge collection of entertainment venues.

How to get to Gillette

The quickest way into Gillette is to fly to the small Gillette–Campbell County Airport, which has flights to Salt Lake City, Denver, and Rock Springs. The airport is to the north of the city, and it takes around 10 minutes to drive downtown – once you've touched down and picked up your bags. Taxi and shuttle bus services are available, but renting a car at the terminal will be your best bet – especially if you're heading out to Black Hills. If you're driving to Gillette, the journey over from Rapid City takes around 2 hours along Interstate 90.
