Hotel Mundial was ok to stay. Service was excellent but as a 4-star hotel I would have expected bit nicer rooms. The blankets were a bit worn out, in my opinion for example. At the breakfast there was a good variety.”
The hotel itself was great, very quirky but quite comfortable. The bathroom was a little on the small side...not much room to move. Otherwise bed was comfortable, breakfast was great..staff were friendly and very helpful. The hotel itself is in a great location..quite close to all the main attractions of the old town and with good restaurants close by. I would definitely recommend the hotel. Lisbon itself is a beautiful city and I will be back. Catherine Ireland”
The Avenida Palace is perfectly located for exploring Lisbon and the surrounding areas with most areas (Alfama, Barrio Alta etc. - sorry about spelling!) within walking distance and the train station right next door (but not in a way which impinges on hotel guests). The knowledgeable and friendly concierges are more than happy to suggest itineraries to make the best use of your time in Lisbon (and, importantly, avoid having to walk uphill too often!). We also got great restaurant recommendations including a local favourite which we would have definitely overlooked had we not been told about it. The hotel is spotless and the toiletries are quite nice. Staff are friendly and professional with most reception, concierge and breakfast room staff seeming to speak quite a few European languages. The bar is also worth a visit if you fancy a quick meal (before 9 p.m.) or a drink - prices are reasonable by comparison with most other European hotels, the barman is lovely and the food and wine that we had were very nice. (Especially the wine!) We had a small issue on our first night in that the air conditioning in our room did not work very well. When we explained at Reception there were no questions or disputes just a simple apology and a promise to solve the problem. When we arrived back after our day exploring we were shown another room (to make sure it was to our liking!) and the room service staff moved us without any fuss. As regular travellers will know problems like this can arise anywhere but how they are dealt with sets the 5 stars apart from the 4 stars. The classic décor may not be to everyone's taste and yes, the rooms are not massive but for the service, comfort and cleanliness not to mention the perfect location the Avenida Palace is definitely worthy of your consideration. If I was going back to Lisbon I would definitely stay there.”
We really enjoyed our holiday in this hotel, great location - overlooking the beach and marina. We found the staff very helpful, anything we needed was dealt with efficiently. Room was very spacious and clean, there was almost too many visits from staff cleaning and checking!! Breakfast was delicious, we didn't eat in the restaurant other than that. i loved the indoor heated pool as it rained for 2 days of our time there. I would love to go back in the summer.”
We had a lovely break at this little oasis. Staff went above and beyond. Courtesy bus from hotel to Vilamoura at set times worked well and it was about E5 in a taxi back. Happy to recommend as we had a super 4 night break.”
A nice and clean hotel close to the marina with a small garden and a nice swimmingpool. The staff was nice and helpfull in other words very serviceminded.”
We booked a Superior double river view room after reading reviews of this hotel and its various rooms. We were given a room with 2 high windows. You could see the river if you stood at the window! The hotel was fully booked with tour groups and others so for 2 of our 4 days we had to accept this room. When we did eventually move to a Superior double river view room it was much bigger and had full length windows.”
This hotel had a good balance for the price. The pros included the close location, the size of the room, the comfort of the bed, free 24 hours of WIFI in your room, and the quality of the breakfast. You should know that the hotel is located uphill from the train station. The breakfast included scrambled eggs, boiled eggs, cooked meat, cold cuts and sliced cheese, breads, yogurt, and fresh fruit. The cons of this place included: the size of the bathroom (tiny), the A/C that was present but did not work, and the fact that was asked for a non-smoking room and got a room that the previous guests had obviously smoked in. Overall, I would recommend it.”
Very nice, comfortable, staff friendly, decent breakfast. Its a bit dated though and refurbishment was underway while we were there. This meant the 17th floor bar, which has amazing views, wasnt open... Its a little bit (about 10mins) away from the main tourist area, but its a nice walk down to the city centre.”
The CS Madeira was exactly what we were looking for in Funchal - Walking distance to center town, but far enough to be quite and calm. Modern new hotel, with fantastic swimming pool facilities and access to the ocean (if you don't mind the cold atlantic waters...). Most of the rooms with full front view of the Ocean, which was fabulous, and are well equipted. Free underground parking was a nice bonus when renting a car (recommended if planning to travel around the island). Breakfast buffet was good. All in all, we were highly satisfied and would recomment this hotel. PS - compared to its neighbours, it is not a bad value for money either. One more point to the list of +...”
I really enjoyed my stay here. The room looked exactly like the photos online so dont expect the most modern of comforts but the service was good and the hotel staff was friendly and helpful every step of the way. On the map, it may not seem close to everything, but a short five minute walk downhill and you are right in the center of the old town. Granted, getting back to the hotel is a fairly steep uphill walk, but its a short cab ride back. Expect to pay about 25-30 euros from the airport to get to the hotel, but the hotel is pretty good about arranging splitting a cab or car back to the airport for its patrons. I will stay here again my next visit to Funchal. Oh, and if you can afford the sea view rooms, take it, its worth it.”
